Ways to Teach Preschoolers Without Curriculum â€Å"What it the best curriculum for my preschooler?† It is a  question often asked by eager homeschooling parents. The preschool years, usually considered ages two to five, are such an exciting time. Young children, full of curiosity, are ready to begin learning and exploring the world around them. They are full of questions and everything is new and exciting. Because preschoolers are like sponges, soaking in amazing amounts of information, its understandable that parents want to capitalize on that. However, formal curriculum can be stifling to a young child. Preschool children learn best through play, interaction with the people around them, imitation, and hands-on experiences. That said, there is nothing wrong with investing in some quality educational resources for preschoolers and spending some time on formal learning and seat work with your two- to five-year-old. However, ideally, formal work should be kept to 15-20 minutes at a time and limited to an hour or so daily. Limiting the time you spend formally teaching your  preschooler doesn’t mean that learning isn’t taking place the rest of the day. There are many ways to teach young children without curriculum, and most of them you are probably already doing. Dont overlook the educational value of these everyday interactions with your child. 1. Ask Questions Make it a point to regularly engage your preschooler. Young children are no strangers to asking questions, but be sure you’re asking some of your own. Ask your preschooler about his play activity.  Ask him  to describe his drawing or creation. When you’re reading books or watching TV with your preschooler, ask her questions such as: Why do you think the character did that?How do you think that made the character feel?What would you have done in that situation?How would that make you feel?What do you think will happen next? Make sure youre asking the questions as part of an overall conversation with your child. Dont make her feel like youre quizzing her.   2. Don’t â€Å"Dumb Down† Conversations Don’t use baby talk with your preschooler or modify your vocabulary. I’ll never forget the time my two-year-old stated that it was â€Å"ridiculous† that a certain attraction was closed at the children’s museum. Children are fantastic contextual learners when it comes to vocabulary, so don’t purposely choose simpler words when you would normally use a more complex one. You can always ask your child to be sure she understands and explain if she doesn’t. Practice naming objects that you encounter as you go about your daily routine, and call them by their  actual names. For example, â€Å"This white flower is a daisy and that yellow one is a sunflower† instead of just calling them flowers. â€Å"Did you see that German Shepherd? Hes much bigger than the poodle, isnt he?† â€Å"Look at that large oak tree. That small one next to it is a dogwood.† 3. Read Every Day One of the best sit-down  ways for young children to learn is reading books together. Spend time reading with your preschoolers every day- even that book you’ve read so many times you don’t even have to look at the words anymore. Preschoolers also learn through repetition, so even though you’re tired of the book, reading it- again- provides another learning opportunity for them. Make sure that you take time to slow down and enjoy the illustrations as well. Talk about the objects in the pictures or how the characters facial expressions show how theyre feeling. Take advantage of opportunities like story time at the library. Listen to audio books together at home or as you run errands in the car. Some of the benefits of listening to a parent read aloud (or listening to audio books) include: Improved vocabularyIncreased attention spanImproved  creativity and imaginationImproved  thinking skillsEncouragement of language and speech development Use the books you read as a springboard for extension activities. Are you reading Blueberries for Sal? Go blueberry picking or bake blueberry cobbler together. Are you reading The Story of Ferdinand? Look up Spain on a map. Practice counting to ten or saying hello in Spanish. The Big Red Barn? Visit a farm or petting zoo. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? Bake cookies together or dress up and take pictures. Picture Book Activities by Trish Kuffner is an excellent resource for activities designed for preschoolers and based on popular children’s books. Don’t feel that you have to limit your child to picture books.Young children often enjoy more complex stories. I had a friend who couldn’t wait to share her love of Chronicles of Narnia  with her children. She read the entire series to them when they were preschool and early elementary age. You may want to consider classics  such as Peter Pan or Winnie the  Pooh.  The Classics Starts series, designed for readers ages 7-9, is also an excellent option for introducing young children- even preschoolers- to classic literature. 4. Play with Your Preschoolers Fred Rogers said, â€Å"Play is really the work of childhood.† Play is how children assimilate information about the world around them.  One simple way for preschoolers to learn without curriculum is to provide a learning-rich environment. Create an atmosphere that invites creative free play and exploration. Young children love to play dress up and learn through imitation and pretend play. Have fun playing store or restaurant with your child. Some simple skill-building activities to enjoy with your preschooler include: Working puzzlesBuilding with blogsDropping clothes pins into clean milk jugsColoring and paintingSculpting with modeling clayPlaying with lacing cardsStringing beads or cerealCutting pictures out of magazines and pasting them on construction paper to make a collageCutting plastic straws 5. Explore Together Spend some time actively noticing your surroundings with your preschooler. Go on nature walks- even if it’s just around your yard or neighborhood. Point out the things you see and talk about them â€Å"Look at the butterfly. Do you remember the moth we saw last night? Do you know that you can tell moths and butterflies apart by their antennae and the way they hold their wings? What are antennae? They are those long, thin pieces (or appendages if you want to use concrete vocabulary) you see on the butterfly’s head. They’re used to help the butterfly smell and keep his balance.† Begin laying the simple foundations for math concepts such as big and little; large and small; and more or less. Talk about spatial relations such as near and far and in front of or behind. Talk about shapes, patterns, and colors. Ask your child to look for objects that are round or those that are blue. Categorize objects. For example, you can name various types of insects that you see- ants, beetles, flies, and bees  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ but also put them in the category â€Å"insects† and talk about what makes them each an insect. What do they have in common?  What makes chickens, ducks, cardinals, and blue jays all birds? 6. Look for the Educational Moments in Your Everyday Activities The activities that you do as you go through your day may be routine to you but fascinating to a young child. Don’t miss those teachable moments. Let your preschooler help you measure ingredients as you bake. Explain how he can stay safe in the kitchen. Don’t climb on cabinets. Don’t touch knives without asking. Don’t touch the stove. Talk about why you put stamps on envelopes. (No, they’re not pretty stickers with which to decorate!)  Talk about ways of measuring time. â€Å"Yesterday we went to Grandma’s house. Today we’re going to stay home. Tomorrow, we’ll go to the library.† Let him weigh the produce at the grocery stores. Ask him to predict which he thinks will weigh more or less- the orange or the grapefruit. Identify the yellow bananas, the red tomatoes, and the green cucumbers. Encourage him to count the oranges as you place them in your shopping cart. Preschoolers are learning all the time, often with little purposeful input from the adults around them. Command-and-Control Approach The Command-and-Control Approach to environmental protection has given rise to regulations that set limits on emissions and discharges from machineries, and on specific properties and makeup of equipment that may be manufactured, imported or utilized in the country. With the government giving due recognition to companies that abide by environmental protection laws, companies are driven to be compliant. Furthermore, companies are spared from the mandatory costs of non-compliance with the set standards and laws. For these reasons, the Command-and-Control Approach can work. (Khanna & Damon 1999) However, it has been pointed out that plain declaration of environmental laws is not enough. Non-compliance should be subject to strictly applied sanctions and penalties for such laws to be effective and for the Command-and-Control Approach to work. (Tietenberg & Lewis 2012) In the United States, the purpose for setting rules and regulations designed to protect the environment were initially declared by former President Richard Nixon on 1 January 1970 through the National Environment Policy Act (NEPA). As stated in the NEPA, the firm policy of the US Federal Government is to establish and maintain conditions that would allow man and nature to co-exist in harmony through the use of powers and resources that the Government has at hand. NEPA further states that this policy delivers the social, economic and other requirements of the American people, both present and future generations. (Wilson 2004) In the years that followed, more environmental standards and laws have been set and legislated. Thus, the Command-and Control Approach of the US Government has spawned the environmental protection system that stands to this day. Subsequently, the Congress instituted the Clean Air Act (CAA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (R CRA), and the Comprehensive environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). (Wilson 2004) In spite of the many laws that have been made for environmental protection, critics have continually hounded the effectiveness and efficiency of such laws with endless questions. These laws contain the goals for which they have been set and critics have zeroed in on how the same goals have not been achieved through the implementation of the same laws. (Wilson 2004) Hence, the limitation of the Command-and-Control Approach is highlighted. Nationally promulgated and applied laws, no matter how good, can never successfully secure environmental protection. After all, the efforts of one specific country cannot combat the harm inflicted by the other countries across the globe. Nonverbal communication is challenge as well such as handshakes, eye contact, hug, and etc. These problems happened so many times from my fiancee who is from America and me who is from South Korea. One day, my father visited to our place for holiday. When my father walked into our place, my fiancee was lying on the sofa and then he said â€Å"Hi. In Korean culture, when adults come to you, you need to stand up and bow to them. That moment, my fiancee’s behavior was disrespectful to my father. This tells us that we grew up differently since we have different culture background. However, we both have the attitude where we like to learn about each other cultures. It gives us a better understanding and respect more. To me, language barrier is one of issue with communication. When I moved to America, I barely spoke English and I was really afraid of speaking with other people, especially in English; however, time went by, as went to high school, college and join in the Army in America, I became more interactive in communication with people. Also, my fiancee helps me to learn and correct my English skill. Interpersonal communication Thousands of people use more online email, texting, Facebook, twitter, and etc. to communicate now, because it’s easier and faster to communicate to others. On the other hand, online communications can be bad. More likely, face to face communication can be avoided. I realized that most people use smart phone anytime and anywhere now. Sadly, it happens during class, meeting, dating, waiting, and dining. In fact, one of my nieces who is 6 years old refused to talk and listen to me when I discipline her. Instead face to face communication, she wanted to text me to say â€Å"sorry. † I didn’t accept her apologize because I believe in true meaningful interpersonal communication should be face to face communication.

The Scarlet Letter Essay -- Literature

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is a great piece of literature. It explores problems in society that still occur today. It is fascinating to see how the Puritans punished adultery then and the lack of punishment of adultery in our society now. It shows how all the characters affect Hester and what everyone does in the community. It shows that no one is exempt from any type of crime in that town. In Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, he analyzes the characters of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Pearl. One of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter is Hester Prynne. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is described as â€Å"a comely woman whose pride sustains her through her punishment and for all the years of her life† (Overview: Characters). She is tall, has dark hair and her attire showed the attitude of her spirit (Hawthorne 51). She has a husband, Roger Prynne, whom she did not love. Before she got married, she was a strong-willed and eager young woman. Her husband, Prynne, has sent her to America and he was to arrive later. When he never arrived in Boston, she assumed he was lost at sea (SparkNotes). At the beginning of the book Prynne is walking out of the prison holding her daughter, Pearl, with the scarlet letter â€Å"A† embroidered on her clothing (Hawthorne 51-52). She wears the scarlet letter as a punishment and her secrecy to her lover. Her husband is in the crowd, and is living in Boston for revenge on her lover (Sparknotes). Hester is being charged with adultery. Her sentence is one that could be used for a much lesser crime (Korobkin). She is then kicked out of town and is forced to live on the outskirts of Boston in a small cottage (Hawthorne 62). Dimmesdale is the â€Å"judge† in Hester’s case. Julius Caesar: Compare and Contrast Essay Essay

Julius Caesar is an ancient leader who is known worldwide for his famous last words â€Å"Et tu Brute?† as his closest friends were brutally murdering him. Barack Obama is the current United States President who has been in office for two consecutive terms, or eight years. Both leaders will be remembered forever, Caesar because of his murder and Obama because he is the first African American President to lead the United States. Although United States President Barack Obama is a leader centuries after the rise and fall of Julius Caesar their traits while in power that they exhibited are polar opposites. Whether it be the way that the leaders treat and respect their wives, the life they lived, or the way that they led their countries, they were opposite in almost every way possible. To begin, Julius Caesar was married to a weak-willed woman named Calpurnia. Calpurnia was a whiny woman who tried to keep Caesar from what he wanted to do and his civil duties as ruler of Rome. Calpurnia had nightmares of Caesar dying and his blood being put on display in the streets, dreams that she scared herself into believing, although becoming true. When Caesar refused to listen to her pleads of staying inside their house, she got on her knees and cried to him begging him to please stay home. This Caesar thought was highly ridiculous and he went anyways, against her wishes. Despite the lack of listening that Caesar had shown towards his wife, Obama looks to his wife as if she were his right-hand-man. Barack Obama is married to a strong-willed woman named Michelle. Michelle is a woman who had dreams and once her husband was elected into office, she made those dreams come true, having her husbands’ back in the decisions that he made for his country. Michelle wrote her own stump speeches for her husband’s presidential campaign and generally spoke without notes showing her involvement in the support of her husbands’ job. Michelle is an advocate for a healthier tomorrow, making meal plans for schools countrywide to follow, Obama also backing her up and helping her in any way he can. President Barack Obama has a respect for his wife that is unbelievably vigorous while the respect that Caesar displayed for his wife was as if there was none at all, not only proving how much times have changed, but showing how strong the bonds of marriage should be. Continuing,  Caesar was a patrician by noble birth being born into a wealthy patrician family that had money beyond knowledge. The ancestry that Caesar had was that of honor and fame being the grandson of Aeneas who was the son of the goddess Venus. Caesar’s family name, Julii Caesar, came from the birth by caesarean section, caes- meaning cut, one of his family members being born by this style of birth. Caesar came from a family of such wealth that his father was in charge of governing the province of Asia. But Obama, on the other hand, was born into a poorer family, his mother being from Wichita, Kansas and his father being on a J-visa from a small town in Kenya, both of his parents being in college on opposite sides of the country, forcing them to separate, Obama being a newborn. Obama was named after his father, being Barack Hussein Obama II, a pure Kenyan name. Obama’s parents were highly educated, his father going to Harvard Law School and his mother going to the University of Washington and then to the University of Hawaii where she graduated with a major in anthropology. Caesar and Obama came from completely different upbringings, one of military greatness and wealth and the other of brilliance and poverty. Finally, Caesar, because of his military background and the fact that he led the Romans to the defeat of the Gauls, he was welcomed home to Rome by the senate granting him triumphs for his victories. When Caesar gained more power over Rome, he ordered a census be taken resulting in the reduction of grain dole, restricting the purchases of certain luxuries and rewarding those who had many children simply because they were increasing the population of Rome. Caesar made some very vital decisions in the development of not only Rome, but the world as well such as changing the traditional calendar to the Egyptian calendar meaning that instead of having 365 days in a year, there would be 365.25 days because of the 29th day of February every fourth year. Caesar also made decisions such as establishing a police system, rebuilding the cities of Corinth and Carthage and building a library as a branch off of the Library of Alexandria. Militarily, Caesar wanted to conquer the Dacians and the Parthians, but he wasn’t able to accomplish that due to his death. As a result of his murder, the month July was named after him, its original name being Quintilis. Yet, even though not having any months named after him or establishing such important institutions, Obama has had his fair amount of fame worthy actions. Obama will forever be remembered as the first African  American Presidential Candidate and first African American to become president. As president Obama promised many choices that would help the United States become stronger as a whole such as better long-range planning, superior fundraising, dominant organizing in caucus states, and better exploitation of delegate allocation rules. Obama also made history by becoming the first democratic president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt to twice win the majority of the popular vote with the people. Obama made the change to reduce the secrecy given to presidential military records to gain the trust of the people he was in charge of making a better state for. Militarily, Obama issued executive orders and presidential memoranda directing the U.S. military to develop plans to withdraw troops from Iraq, claiming that he was fixing the problem that former President George W. Bush started. Caesar wanted to start war with other countries while Obama wanted to end the war that presented itself, their strategies of dealing with their countries being completely opposite. Caesar was a leader that because of the way that he took care of his subjects was murdered because he simply was not liked. Obama is a leader of a different time period, being constantly followed by security, ensuring his safety, and maybe that’s why Caesar wasn’t saved, because times have changed. Perhaps Obama has learned from Caesar’s mistakes and that has influenced to take votes among the senate and people before making decisions that could ultimately question the safety of the citizens looking up to him. Caesar and Obama both have their own ways of leading their states, treating their wives, and came from completely different upbringings, the one similarity the share being that they will be legends for years to come.
